Area unemployment rates were mixed in April

Unemployment levels in April fell in the District, increased slightly in Maryland and remained steady in Virginia, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Friday.

NYC schools chief pushes buyout plan for teachers

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott is proposing to offer buyouts to hundreds of teachers who don’t have permanent jobs.

In a speech to business and civic leaders Thursday, Walcott also said he won’t wait for the teachers union to agree on a new evaluation system for its members.

Walcott said that if there’s no agreement by next fall, he will start removing teachers from classrooms after two years of bad ratings.
